“I AM A GOD” the KING screamed….
The enemy was fleeing back towards their ships anchored off the coastline.
Those slain in battle were too numerous to count as their blood mixed with the sands of the beach.
The tide was lapping at some of the bodies close enough to try n drag them into the depths of the sea’s dark abyss.
The KING searched for his QUEEN until his eyes found her cleaning off her duel long knives.
Sheathing his blade he approached.
She was smiling blood splattering her face and armor.
“My love, we have done it.” She said as she rose and stood beside him looking out at the bloody tide.
The KING glimpsed movement from one of the fallen, walked over, and plunged a half-broken spear into the fallen soldier’s skull, ending the movement…
…except for the occasional muscle twitch…
“Indeed we have he replied.” A smile upon his cracked, blood 🩸 splattered lips.
The KING and QUEEN found their horses and mounted up, their personal guard accompanying them and set on the trail to their cliff-top castle…leaving their army to tend to the wounded and support one another.
No cheer of victory… No congratulatory war cry…
NOTHING.
Fast forward 3 years…
The Kings and Queens of the surrounding lands have heard tales of a Kingdom where the rulers never leave the castle’s walls.
Where the people of the Kingdom starve.
Where the army’s blades are rusty and brittle from lack of care and use.
Where the castle’s foundation is starting to crumble…pieces every so often rolling down the cliff to the sands of the coastline below.
The surrounding rulers declare war on the KING and QUEEN knowing that they are not prepared and the battle will be over before it begins.
You see the KING and QUEEN were satisfied with the results of the original battle. To them that was “good enough” and they figured because of that one brutal battle, everyone else would stop trying or wanting more. So they sat idle until the day came when their “greatness” just wasn’t “GREAT” enough.
When the battle was over they both lay slain on the very thrones they had sworn to protect.
To this day… tales are told, that when the moon is high and the tide is low 😉 a ghostly couple can be seen walking the beach below the destroyed castle’s foundation hand in hand…
Some swear that it is the….
KING and QUEEN OF THE SANDS.
